Local book signing & reading

San Marcos resident Marieta Hutchison will be selling and signing copies of her children's book that teaches kindness, empathy and environmental conservation at Half Price Books for their local author series story time and book signing on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m.

“Mermaids Are Magical - You Can Be Too” is an expository book on how to become magical like mermaids – and merboys for the matter – written in rhyme. The illustrator of the book, Jill Pankey, is also a San Marcos resident. A melodic stanza throughout the book provides a song for remembrance and reinforcement. Though the story is a global one, the author and illustrator have included shout outs to San Marcos, including some local endangered species of the San Marcos River and Coahuiltecan guardian animals. Readers can challenge themselves and to find all of them.

In the Introduction’ of the book, Hutchison has made mention of four experiences that birthed the book: Volunteering to serve with the San Marcos Art Advocates, being introduced to Mermaid Society SMTX and learning about the San Marcos Public Library’s program 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Hutchison has donated copies to the San Marcos Public Library and the San Marcos CISD Elementary Schools and also incorporated teacher resources in back of book.

Copies of her book are for sale at the Paper Bear store in San Marcos and online. Ten percent of book sales will be donated to the Youth Initiatives of the Mermaid Society SMTX.
