'San Marcos: A River Runs Through It'
Friday, August 16, 2019

Nearly 100 works of art by area artists make up a new show at the Price Center hanging now through Oct. 12.

A unique display of works celebrates the broad diversity of the San Marcos community in an exhibit entitled “San Marcos: A River Runs Through It,” hanging throughout the facility.

A wide variety of media depict the river, mermaids, native wildlife, unicycle football, the town square, Sacred Springs Powwow and more. In addition, a fresh display of water-inspired quilts in the stairwell gallery, and a separate photography show in the 1910 Room completes this visual love letter to San Marcos. Many of the works are available for sale.

“We’re extremely pleased with, and excited about, the number of works and diversity of media," said Joan Nagel, Price Center Arts Committee chair. “It’s especially nice to welcome so many ‘new to us’ artists in this show.”

Works on display range from traditional oil paintings and black and white photography to unique mixed media, mosaics, assemblage, found and fused glass, fiber art, baskets and more. The public may view the art daily from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. now through Oct. 12.

An Artists’ Reception will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22 from 6-8 p.m. Guests can meet the artists, enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, wine, infused water and the live jazz piano music of noted musician Morris Nelms. The event is free and open to all.

The Price Center’s rotating art shows are made possible in part through grant funds from the San Marcos Arts Commission. A portion of any proceeds from the sale of works on display benefits the Price Center, which is operated by the Greater San Marcos Area Seniors Association (GSMASA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

“Peace & Understanding” is the theme for the Committee’s next planned show, which will hang from mid-Oct. through early Jan. The Call is open to any and all area artists. The artwork will be accepted from 9a m. – 5p.m, Monday, Oct. 14 and Tuesday, Oct. 15
