Price Center issues call for art from women

'The Language Women Speak'
Friday, February 21, 2020

A new call for art focusing on women is underway for a special show in honor of International Women’s Day coming to the Price Center this March.

Organizers behind a one-day pop-up event last spring at the library are extending the length of the show and expanding the number of participating artists. Live music, poetry, performances, art and a collaborative installation will be featured during the reception, set for Sunday, March 8 – International Women’s Day – from 3-5 p.m. at the Price Center.

“We gained so much strength from each other in one short afternoon last year,” said Debangana Banerjee, event founder. “The bigger show and longer display will make it easier for us to enhance our creative practices through the collaboration and encouragement from each other and our community.”

“The Language Women Speak” call for art is open to all women and skill levels. All Media, including nontraditional and traditional creations are eligible. Works must be original creations and family friendly. Interested parties may submit up to two pieces ready to hang. A limited number of small to mid-sized 3-D art may also be submitted. A $10 entry fee is due at the time of submission.

The expanded event planning committee this year includes Banerjee and local artists Joan Nagel, Garrie Borden, Margaret Adie and Suzanne Shield-Polk. In addition to the art, live music, poetry and performances, a collaborative installation during the reception, called  “At the Table,” will express the actual and metaphorical status of the dining table in the home.

“So often the dining table serves additional multiple purposes including workplace, maker-space, meditation space, personal space and more,” said Shield-Polk, who is overseeing the installation. “Through the objects participating artists will add to the display throughout the reception, different stories will unfold.”

Any area woman interested in participating in the show may drop off artwork at the following times:

  • Feb. 24 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Feb. 25 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
