Rhea’s Ice Cream wins Partner of the Month Award

Thursday, June 27, 2019

The San Marcos Main Street Program has designated Rhea’s Ice Cream Partner of the Month to celebrate the shop’s growth and its 10-year anniversary.

Rhea’s Ice Cream was first started by Rhea Ortamond who had a passion for homemade ice cream and unique flavors. She continued growing her business and perfecting several flavors that are now the original foundation flavors of the shop until she moved to Chicago in 2015. Ortamond sold the shop to Lindsey Belk and The Root Cellar Café, who have helped keep the doors open and have continued to grow the business to three locations.

Rhea’s is located at 318 N. LBJ Dr., just a block away from the historic downtown square. Business hours are Monday-Sunday 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Some of their unique flavors consist of Circus Animal Cookie, Banana Pudding, Big Red, Smores, Avocado Coconut and a fan favorite of Goat Cheese and Raspberry Jam.

The San Marcos Main Street Program chooses one downtown establishment each month for the Downtown Partner of the Month Award. The award is presented to an institution that exemplifies the following eight criteria: Growth, staying power, innovation, response to adversity, contribution to community-oriented projects, marketing and promotional efforts, curb appeal and beautification. If you know of an organization or group that qualifies as a Partner of the Month based on Main Street’s eight criteria, or would like more information, email mainstreet@sanmarcostx.gov.

In 1986, San Marcos was designated an official Main Street City by the Texas Historical Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation and remains one of the oldest Main Street programs in the state. The vision of the Main Street Program is to foster a downtown that is a unique and culturally vibrant destination, where local businesses thrive and people of all ages can connect, create and celebrate.
