The San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (SMUUF) recently took up a collection of $1,025 during their Sunday morning worship service for the Katherine Anne Porter School (KAPS) in Wimberley.

"Once a month our church takes up a collection for a local nonprofit organization that aligns with our religious values,” SMUUF Social Justice Chair Jeannie Lewis said. “KAPS is a free charter school that serves students in need of more individual attention."

"We serve students from seven counties surrounding Wimberley, meeting the needs of 165 students each year,” Principal of KAPS Dr. Erin Flynn said. “Many of these students attend KAPS to escape bullying – commonly as a LGBTQ target– to have an extended opportunity to explore the fine arts in a school setting, to better situate themselves to be successful in school while facing a disability – commonly an emotional disturbance, anxiety disorder, or hyperactivity – to find a school ‘home’ as they experience homelessness in their everyday lives, to be recognized as having value as a unique individual, and to obtain one on one attention they deserve.

Additionally, KAPS has been labeled 'the greenest school in Texas' for our outstanding environmental efforts including rainwater collection, recycling and resource conservation."
