Texas State Galleries presents ‘Illusions of Reverie’ exhibit

Sunday, April 17, 2022

The Texas State Galleries will present “Illusions of Reverie,” a group exhibition featuring 18 artists within the School of Fine Arts and Design. These artists are working across various media such as painting, sculpture, video, photography, and drawing.

While the represented artists and their work vary greatly in media and concept, the theme of a daydream, or rather reverie, ties them all together. All of these artists hope to show their vulnerability by creating and sharing works about what they daydream and what they think about when they are lost in thought. Several artists make work that explores difficult-to-express and intimate ideas like mental health, immigration, absence, identity and gentrification. Others focus on lighter or more uplifting themes like family, nostalgia, exploration and culture.

Exhibiting artists are Ashley Amyx, a multimedia artist exploring watercolor and controlled burning; Alejandra Gonzalez-Zertuche, a painter exploring the immigration experience in the U.S.; Alex Renbarger, a painter discussing introspection through the mundane and repetition; Alondra Garcia, a multimedia artist making work on her family and identity; Brittany Zuehlke, a painter working with 3D elements and neon colors; Calpurnia Mariposa, a interdisciplinary artist exploring themes of illusion and memory; Cameron Rainer, a photographer exploring mental health in relationships; Elise Cantu, a painter focusing on the gentrification in San Antonio; Iliana Ramirez, a photographer exploring her identity through her family; Jaden McCreary, a drawer exploring the black experience; Jessica Urbizu, a multimedia artist exploring themes of diversity and women; Kathryn Fletcher, a photographer using self portraits to explore mental health; Kiana Reyes, a mixed media artist exploring mental health, adolescence, and growing up with an AFAB body; Makenna Hatter, a painter exploring the human experience; Max Bridges, a printmaker using food to comment on people’s identity; Michelle Miller, a ceramics artist exploring family and her Mexican heritage; Ray Marquez, a video artist exploring emotions, humans, and animal nature; and Teri Cruz, a painter using paint on 3D elements.

These artists have been working towards their Bachelors of Fine Arts within the School of Art & Design at Texas State University. Together, they will showcase their years of hard work, passion, and dedication in “Illusions of Reverie.”

“Illusions of Reverie” will have an opening reception in the Texas State Galleries in the Joann Cole Mitte Building (601 University Dr.) on April 25 from 5 to 8pm. Gallery hours are Monday - Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday 12 to 6 p.m.

The galleries are open to the public and do not require an admission fee. For more information including parking, go to the Texas State Gallery’s homepage (txstgalleries. org/).
