TXST to present ‘Antigone’ Sept. 27 - Oct. 2
Texas State’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Antigone” by Bertolt Brecht, translation by Judith Malina, Sept. 27 - Oct. 2 in the Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre.
The classic Greek tragedy will be directed by third-year MFA student Jess Hawthorne Fiene. Brecht, a German playwright, originally adapted the play based on the 451 BC work by Sophocles.
While the plot and characters are consistent with the original, Brecht’s rendition was written at the end of World War II in Germany. Thus, Brecht’s play differs from the source material in terms of setting, political and economic contexts and the motivations of the character, Creon.
Sophocles’ Creon goes against the will of the gods by refusing to bury his nephew. Brecht’s version of the antagonist is callous and lacking compassion, ultimately creating an allusion to Hitler and his rule.
“Antigone” opens Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Patti Strick- el Harrison Theatre and runs through its final matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Oct. 2. Tickets are $20 for the public, $10 for students and $13 for groups larger than 10. Tickets may be purchased online at txstatepresents.com.
