Wimberley Players present ‘It Had to Be You’

Sunday, April 18, 2021

Joseph Bologna and Renee Taylor’s absurd, fast-paced comedy, “It Had To Be You,” opens on the Wimberley Players stage on April 23 and runs through May 2 for two weekends with six performances.

Theda Blau’s hopes of becoming a successful actress in New York City have not panned out. An eccentric, ex-Hollywood ‘B movie’ actress and wannabe playwright, Theda auditions for a TV commercial but instead of getting the part, she attracts the attention of Vito Pignoli, the successful producer and director. Charmed by her quirky ways, Vito shares a cab with her from the audition and when they arrive at her East Village apartment, helps her carry her Christmas packages to the door. Theda invites Vito in, hoping that he will read her latest script. Vito accepts but has other things on his mind. What happens from there on that snowy Christmas Eve, will leave audiences laughing out loud.

Other plays by this actor/writer duo include Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), a Broadway comedy in which they both starred and won an Academy Award Nomination for the screenplay of the film version. Both Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna have extensive acting credits in TV and film. Taylor also played the role of Sylvia Fine on the television sitcom The Nanny.

The role of Theda Blau is played by Roxanne Strobel, new to the Wimberley Players stage but with many acting credits in Houston. The role of Vito Pignoli is played by Danny Mosier, a WP veteran, seen in numerous productions including The Odd Couple, The Lion in Winter, Little Shop of Horrors, Making God Laugh, Tuna Christmas and others. Greg Dew plays Freddie.

Directed by Trish Rigdon, the Executive Producer is Adam Witko. “It Had To Be You” is presented by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
