Sunday, September 26, 2021

What’s the big flap about in Wimberley? Wings Over Wimberley (WOW), a two-day event celebrating the Mexican free-tailed bats, is flying into Wimberley Friday Oct. 1 and Saturday Oct. 2. It will be held on the shaded property of Ozona Bank, overlooking the Cypress Creek Bridge where the bat colony resides.

Hosted by Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance (WVACA), the local nonprofit organization that promotes visual, performing, literary and culinary arts as well as culture throughout the Valley, Wings Over Wimberley seeks to educate and emphasize the importance of bats to our community. Bat appreciation and benefits will be highlighted through all aspects of WOW. Find out how the February freeze affected our local bat population and how they are now slowly returning.

Visitors to WOW will be treated to a variety of vendors and artists eager to showcase their creations. Browse the festival for metal bats, abstract bat paintings, pottery, photography, wood works, local artists and more.

Food vendors will be available. Sip on Middleton Brewing Company’s new bat brew, Gone Batty Dark IPA. A children’s area run by the local Girl Scout troop will feature bat-related crafts. Stop by for a photo with special guest Batman arriving from Gotham City in the Batmobile. The blood bank, We Are Blood, will be on location on Saturday, 12 – 4 p.m. for much needed blood donations. Get more information and make an appointment at weareblood.org.

The festival begins at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1 with entertainment by singer, songwriter and musician, Kit Holmes. At 7 p.m. local favorite, Marvin Boterra and the Broken Glass Band will perform until 9 p.m. with an intermission at “flight time” to watch for the bats to fly out at sunset.

Saturday, Oct. 2, the festival opens at 11 a.m. with Wimberley-born singer Lance Lipinski. Local vocalist and guitarist, Jennifer Zavaleta and her band follow from 1 - 3 p.m. Next on stage, Wimberley musician and singer, Roy Cunningham and his band perform from 4 - 6 p.m.

Closing out the festival with a mix of blues, swing and Motown, is Texas performer Hale Baskin and her Southpaw Preachers, from 7 - 9 p.m.

Stop by the Bat Cave, located by the Cypress Creek Bridge, for a souvenir WOW T-shirt or cap. A limited number of reserved parking passes are available for purchase before and during the event. To reserve your parking place within walking distance contact wingsoverwimberley@ gmail.com or visit wingsoverwimberley.com/ shop to purchase online.
