On New Year’s Day, I was up early to see which bird would be the first to put in an appearance at my place in 2021.
A call for art focusing on women and their work is underway for a new gallery show coming to the Price Center in conjunction with International Women’s Day, which takes place on March 8. The show, titled “From Challenge Comes Change,” is open to all area women and those who identify as female. Plans call for a virtual and in-person show as well as a virtual celebration on March 8.
Pantone, the gurus of all things color, has selected Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow for the 2021 Colors of the Year. Some headlines call it Pandemic Gray but The Garden Guy loves it and you will see it opens the door to one of the toughest, persevering and award-winning plants of all time, Flambé Yellow chrysocephalum.

My journey this week takes me to a summary of my last year’s columns with a few added remembrances.
Life changed dramatically in 2020. When the World Health Organization declared a COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, hundreds of millions of people across the globe were forced to change how they go about their daily lives, including how they exercise.
The San Marcos Area Retired Teachers and Staff (SMARTS) will have their first Zoom meeting of 2021 at 10 a.m., Jan. 12, with Marilyn Johnson speaking to them on “Celebrating Heritage and History.” Johnson graduated from San Marcos High School and Texas State University (then-Southwest Texas State). She will share her story, the good and the bad, growing up as a Black American in San Marcos and beyond. She celebrates her history and the lessons learned by accomplishing goals, despite a few roadblocks.
The month of February has a few important events to celebrate. In the United States, one such event is Presidents’ Day, which this year will be observed on Monday, Feb. 15. Presidents’ Day honors both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, two influential presidents who were born in February.
