What a difference a year makes.

After closing out last year with a 2.95 percent year-end deficit in sales tax allocations from the office of the State Comptroller, San Marcos is ending 2018 up a whopping 26.19 percent to $27,860,431.05.

The city’s December allocation, which generally represents sales that occurred in October, continued a double-digit trend that has been almost unbroken from month to month since the 13.04 percent increase in December 2017. This month’s rebate of $2,586,402.71 was up by 10.38 percent.

City coffers got a boost two years ago from sales taxes paid during the construction of the Amazon Fulfillment Center but once it was up and running, allocations fell. They rose again once the influence of the Best Buy call center kicked in, officials said.

All of Hays County’s 10 municipal taxing entities closed out the year with positive percentages. San Marcos’ was actually bested by that in Hays City, which saw a 37.20 percent increase for the year. In terms of December, the municipality experienced a 50.43 percent increase compared to a year ago.
