‘Stomping’ suspect jailed after assault at Rio Vista

SMPD Reports
Thursday, September 6, 2018

San Marcos Police responded nearly 200 times to the city’s riverside parks over the course of the long Labor Day Weekend, with the vast majority of those calls for violations of city ordinances including possession of alcoholic beverages.

Most all of them resulted in verbal warnings though others ended in written citations.

There was only one notable exception, according to online records. On Sunday at approximately 7:39 p.m., police responded to Rio vista Park and took 18-year-old Julian Aaron Baez of Buda into custody for aggravated assault.

According to an email from city spokesman Trey Hatt in response to a Daily Record query, Baez had assaulted another person by “stomping on their head.”

The victim, who was not named, received incapacitating injuries and was rushed to Central Texas Medical Center for treatment.

Officers located Baez a short distance away “with blood on his foot and calf,” according to the email. “Baez was upset because he said he ‘took a minor in possession’ charge for the victim earlier in the day and then the victim threw a football at him.”

The email also noted that both Baez and the victim were intoxicated at the time of the incident.

As of Wednesday morning, Baez was still behind bars in Hays County Jail under a $50,000 bond. Aggravated assault is a second degree felony.

Baez had one previous arrest in San Marcos in 2017 for assault, for which he served a term of probation.

According to Tuesday’s police blotter, officers or park rangers responded to 170 calls at the city’s parks between Friday morning and Monday night.
