7th annual Mardi Gras parade set for March 2

 San Marcos’ original Carnival Krewe – The Mistick Krewe of Okeanos — will once again bring the Carnival spirit and traditions to San Marcos, with its 7th annual Okeanos Parade on Saturday, March 2 at noon. 

As this year’s parade coincides with Texas Independence Day, we will be celebrating what makes Texas the best state in the United States of America, and have all the color, fun and spirit of the first six parades plus more participants, an expanded parade route and the unmistakable sounds of Carnival. 

The theme of this year’s parade will be “Okeanos Salutes Texas Independence.” The name “Texas” originates from a Native American (Caddo) word “teyshas” meaning friends or allies.  Our state motto is very simple – “Friendship.” We believe that the best way to create and cement a common ground between all types of people and organizations, is through fun and participation in an annual event, fostering and developing friendships and community in the process.

The Mistick Krewe of Okeanos was originally thought up eight years ago by a mixed group of native Texans and transplanted Louisianans (who of course once they came to our fair city and state, decided to stay). Our Krewe is named after the Greek deity of rivers and oceans, Okeanos.  What a better name for the oldest and only Krewe of San Marcos than one that represents what San Marcos is known for; our pure springfed river.  A river which has helped to create and nurture community along its banks for more than 10,000 years and is one of the city’s most important assets. 

The 7th annual route will start and end at the VFW Hall on Hopkins, and will run through two historic neighborhoods (Belvin Street and San Antonio Street).

Participants have been asked to create colorful rolling and walking units representing their neighborhoods/organizations and following our theme (all about Texas), and are encouraged to toss beads, cups and other throws, which will be tossed to viewers lining the sidewalks throughout the parade route. Every parade entry is automatically entered into the Parade Contest.  

The public is invited to attend the parade, which is expected to last approximately 45 minute to 1 hour.  Belvin and San Antonio streets will be blocked off from through traffic and parking. Traffic will be stopped periodically on Hopkins Street at Scott Street to allow the parade to cross over to San Antonio Street.  

The Mistick Krewe’s Carnival season began with the Twelfth Night Masque, held on Epiphany, to honor local notables recognized for their work in the challenging field of historic preservation and conservation and who have made San Marcos a better place to live through their efforts.
