BASTROP – Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative’s buildings, vehicles and employees have gone gold in September to help put the spotlight on Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. When the calendar turns to October, gold will give way to pink to raise awareness during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This is the first year Bluebonnet has celebrated Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by illuminating its buildings in gold light, decorating its vehicles with gold decals and handing out gold ribbon pins and temporary tattoos to members. Employees are wearing gold rubber bracelets that say “No One Fights Alone,” and gold rubber rings marked “Hope.”

Gold ribbons help put the spotlight on Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Since October 2012, Bluebonnet has bathed its member service centers in pink light, added pink ribbon decals to its trucks, handed out pink ribbon pins in the communities it serves, replaced its familiar blue-and-white hard hats with pink ones, and donned pink T-shirts to remind everyone of the ongoing effort to raise funds to support prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

“Nearly everyone knows someone or has a family member who has been affected by cancer, including several members of our Bluebonnet family,” said Matt Bentke, Bluebonnet’s general manager. “Our employees have really embraced our efforts to help raise awareness for these cancers. We receive so many positive comments from our members and hear stories about how cancer has touched their lives.”

There are many resources available to learn more about breast cancer. For more information, visit the National Cancer Institute’s website, the American Cancer Society's website, the American Childhood Cancer Organization's website, CURE Childhood Cancer's website, or the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
