Board to be briefed on voting countywide

Election issues figure prominently in the SMCISD board of trustees agenda for Monday night.

The trustees are slated to vote on a resolution supporting inclusion in the Texas Countywide Polling Place Program.

Hays County Elections Administrator Jennifer Anderson gave a presentation on the countywide voting system on Feb. 26 at the Hays County Commissioners Court meeting. The program allows voters to cast ballots at countywide voting centers instead of polling places located in each county election precinct.

“Basically vote centers are what we do in early voting, but not on Election Day,” she explained.

The county is applying for inclusion in the countywide program, but it takes support from all the jurisdictions, she said.

At the SMCISD board’s agenda prep meeting on March 4, trustee Miguel Arredondo said he would like reassurances that the county can provide voting locations for school board elections, since often the school district is the only jurisdiction that holds elections in May.

In other business Monday night, the board is expected to vote to cancel the elections for Single Member Districts 4 and 5 and declare the unopposed candidates elected to office. Incumbent trustees Kathy Hansen and Clementine Cantu hold the District 4 and 5 seats, respectively.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in Classroom 11 at San Marcos High School, 2601 Rattler Road. SMCISD board meetings are also streamed online.
