Bryan Martinez

Capital murder trial for 2015 death begins on Monday

Friday, August 17, 2018

Jury selection for the trial of a Hays County man accused of fatally shooting another man in 2015 begins Monday.

Bryan Martinez was 19 when a Hays County Grand Jury indicted him for the murder of Isaac Olvera. The shooting took place in October 2015 at a residence in the 1300 block of Thorpe Lane. An affidavit of probable cause said that Martinez and two other people went to the residence for a drug deal. Martinez tried to enter carrying a sawed-off shotgun, and when a struggle broke out, the affidavit says, Martinez shot Olvera in the stomach. Though gravely wounded, Olvera was able to name his attacker before he died at Seton Hays Medical Center in Kyle.

Martinez was arrested in a traffic stop near the intersection of Hwy. 123 and Redwood Road less than 24 hours after the shooting was reported and was booked into the Hays County Jail under $500,000 bond.

Jonathan Guia

Jonathan Guia is also charged with capital murder in the case and is in Hays County Jail awaiting trial.

According to court records, Martinez entered a plea of guilty in June. He will be tried in the 22nd Judicial Court. The jury selection will take place beginning at 9 a.m. Monday.
