City, county meeting today to canvass votes

The San Marcos City Council will have a special meeting this morning to canvass the returns and declare the results of the Nov. 6 election and order a runoff election for Place 5 and the unexpired Place 4 term on council. 

After the votes are canvassed, the winners of the mayoral and Place 6 elections will receive certificates of election and take the oath of office. 

The runoff election for Places 4 and 5 will be held on Dec. 11. Early voting locations, dates and times will be finalized today, according to the city. The canvassing report from the election will be sent out today.

The unofficial election results gave Jane Hughson the victory in the mayoral race over incumbent Mayor John Thomaides. In the Place 6 race, incumbent Melissa Derrick defeated challenger Juan Miguel Arredondo.

The runoff election will see Mark Rockeymoore and Shane Scott competing for Place 4 and Jocabed “Joca” Marquez facing off against Rick Henderson for Place 5. 

Council will meet at 6 p.m. today in council chambers at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins St., to canvass the votes.

The Hays County Commissioners Court will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. to canvass the votes from the county election.
