City pitches renaming portion of Hunter Road

Public Meeting
Sunday, October 28, 2018

It’s always been confusing — traveling through San Marcos, you can be on Hwy. 80, Hopkins Street and Hunter Road — all while maintaining the same lane.

Now, the city is proposing to reduce the confusion by extending the roadway’s designation as West Hopkins to Wonder World Drive.

A public meeting on the proposal will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15 in the multipurpose room of the San Marcos Public Library, 501 E. Hopkins.

The proposal calls for renaming the portion of the roadway between W. San Antonio Street and Wonder World Drive, currently Hunter Road, to West Hopkins. “The name change would eliminate multiple names along a single stretch of roadway, which would improve 911 response, minimize driver confusion and increase public safety,” the city said in a news release announcing the meeting.

Flyers announcing the information meeting and explaining the name change have been mailed to all properties and addresses along the affected area on Hunter Road.

Until 2017, Hopkins Street was owned by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). At that time, the roadway between Guadalupe Street and Wonder World Drive had many names, including FM 2439, State Hwy. 80, Hopkins Street and Hunter Road. In 2017, TxDOT transferred this portion of the street to the city.

After the Nov. 15 meeting, the Planning & Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the name change on Jan. 8, 2019. The City Council will hold a public hearing on the proposal on Feb. 5, 2019. Both public hearings will be held at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins.
