Commissioners schedule two hearings on budget

Hays County
Wednesday, August 1, 2018

Hays County commissioners received the county judge’s recommended budget on Tuesday and set dates for two workshops to discuss county spending for Fiscal Year 2019.

“I can give you some of the highlights,” said Clint Garza, director of development services for the county.

The recommended budget balances to the current tax rate, Garza said, and includes $2 million in position and personnel changes due in part to the expansion of the county jail.

“There’s $2 million in capital equipment replacement, $142,000 in updates and expansion to the early warning system, the low crossing system, there’s some upgrades to the county court-at-law courtroom, since we’re expanding … and $90,000 for capital technology equipment.”

The county’s calendar had marked Aug. 7 and Aug. 14 as dates for budget workshops for the commissioners. The workshops are scheduled for 10 a.m. on those days.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Debbie Gonzales Ingalsbe noted that one member of the court will be absent on Aug. 14, but budget discussions are time sensitive.

“I know we have a timeline that we need to work with,” she said.

After some discussion, the rest of the court agreed to keep the Aug. 14 date.

‘We could probably try to refrain from making monumental decisions,” Precinct 3 Commissioner Lon Shell said.

In other business, the commissioners left the county burn ban in place.

“I’m sure we’re all aware that there’s been a lack of rain,” Ingalsbe said. “... The burn ban will stay active.”
