COMMUNAL CONSTRUCTION

Volunteers Jacqueline Chirunga,Terry Hedrick, Discovery Center Attendant Conrad Chappell, Emily Madeley and Eric Weeks work together to build the foundation structure of a keyhole garden during the Vegetable Garden Workday at the San Marcos Discovery Center.

Discovery Center Attendant Conrad Chappell crouches by the foundation of the keyhole garden as he grabs water-soaked cardboard to start lining the interior of the bed.

Graduate student, and garden planner, Alex von Rosenberg sprays down the hügelkultur garden bed with a hose to keep it moist as the group of volunteers constructs the rest of the garden.

Volunteer Eliza Eby takes a break from helping her mother spread mulch across the communal garden plot.

Alex von Rosenburg turns soil and leaf litter in a wheel barrow with a shovel before it is sifted onto the hügelkultur garden bed to provide another layer of material that will compost itself, much like organic material on a forest floor does, providing nutrients for the plants that grow in the bed.

Volunteers work together to move the heavy stone slab that will form the seat of a bench in the communal vegetable garden.

After donating their time to help complete the garden, volunteers pose for a group photo together in front of the finished communal vegetable garden plot.
