County honors Wimberley Lions for 50 years of service

Sunday, January 27, 2019

The Hays County Commissioners Court honored the Wimberley Lions Club on its 50th anniversary and thanked the members for their assistance to nonprofits and their service to the community.

The Wimberley Club is the third-largest Lions Club in Texas with 174 members, and is best known for its Market Day events, which serve as a fundraiser, Lions Club President Richard Newsum told the court.

According to the proclamation, the Lions Club funds scholarships, sponsors high school students for Lions Club summer camps, including one for special-needs children, and supports some 40 not-for-profit organizations in the Wimberley Valley.

To date, the club has donated more than $4 million for charitable causes.

The Lions Club also has a health initiative that includes Kids Sight Vision Testing and plans its first diabetes-screening event in April 2019 in conjunction with a Medical Explorers group at Texas State University.
