County pursuing grants for veterans services and Veterans Treatment Court

Hays County
Tuesday, November 13, 2018

Veterans’ services, grants and donations, and the realignment of Farm to Market Road 2001 are all on the agenda for the Hays County Commissioners Court this morning.

As part of its consent agenda, the court will consider authorizing a grant application to the Texas Veterans Commission for $250,000 for the county Veterans Treatment Court. The grant would fund a court coordinator position and the continuation of the Veterans Treatment Court program. The application is due Nov. 16.

The commissioners will also consider a grant application to the Texas Veterans Commission’s general assistance grant program for $87,573 to expand veteran transportation services and emergency financial assistance. Veterans Services offers Hays County veterans transportation to and from appointments in the surrounding area. The grant money would be used to hire an additional veteran service officer to provide transportation and to help cover fuel costs and vehicle maintenance.

In other business the commissioners will authorize the Office of Emergency Services to accept a donation of a 2005 Wells Cargo trailer from the city of San Marcos that will be used with the county’s hazmat vehicle. The trailer will allow county workers to transport bulky equipment that do not fit on the hazmat response vehicle but are needed to respond to incidents.

The court also will accept a donation from the Harry L. Willett Foundation for the Memorial Day Flood 2015 documentary and a grant from the Hays County Child Protective Board, which is giving four quarterly payments of $3,750 for a total of $15,000.

Also on the agenda is a possible resolution requesting that the Texas Department of Transportation initiate the development of an agreement with Hays County, the city of Buda and the city of Niederwald to outline the process for removing portions of the existing FM 2001 between Interstate Highway 35 and State Highway 21 from the state highway system and adding portions of the proposed realigned FM 2001 to the system.

The Hays County Commissioners Court will meet at 9 a.m. on the third floor of the Hays County Courthouse, 111 San Antonio St. Meetings are also streamed live
