Early voting underway for council runoffs

Early voting for the Dec. 11 council runoff election started yesterday and continues through Thursday, Dec. 7. At stake are two spots on the San Marcos City Council. 

The runoff election is for City Council Place 4, the unexpired term vacated by Mayor Jane Hughson, and for City Council Place 5.

Running for Place Four are Mark Rockeymoore and Shane Scott, and for Place Five are Jocabed “Joca” Marquez and Rick Henderson.

At the Hays County Government Center, early voting is occurring from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Early voting will resume at the government center Monday, Dec. 3, through Thursday, Dec. 6, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours for the last day of early voting, on Dec. 7, will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Early voting also will be held at two satellite locations. At the LBJ Student Center on the Texas State University campus, early voting will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 28-30. At the Hays County Health Department at 401 A Broadway St., early voting hours will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 1, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 3 and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 4. 

“We encourage all registered voters to exercise their right and vote in the runoff election,” said City Clerk Jamie Case. “Historically, local runoff elections have lower voter turnout than regular elections, but they are essential to the governance of our community.”

On Election Day, polling locations will be the health department for precincts 110 and 113; Dunbar Center for precincts 111 and 112; Allenwood Homes on Thorpe Lane for precincts 413, 414, 416 and 417; Stone Brook Senior Center on Stagecoach trail for precincts 315, 316 and 317; CM Allen Homes at 820 Sturgeon for precinct 120; Crockett Elementary School on Girard Street for precincts 318, 330 and 334; Brookdale (formerly Horizon Bay) on Ranch Road 12 for precinct 336; and Travis Elementary School on Post Road for precincts 332, 415 and 447.

The runoff results will be canvassed and the new City Council members sworn in on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 6 p.m. a City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins.
