Gregson won’t seek re-election

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

San Marcos City Council member Place 5 Scott Gregson has announced that he will not run for re-election in November, and he has endorsed a candidate to replace him.

In a press release issued Monday, Gregson said he intends to focus on civic work and his business interests and that he endorses Rick Henderson to take his place on the council.

“I have and continue to serve on some eight nonprofit and public boards and commissions including the Hays Caldwell United Way Board of Directors, the CTMC Foundation Board and as chairman of the San Marcos Regional Airport Advisory Commission,” Gregson said in the press release. “My commitment to this community is not diminished by my decision not to seek re-election for another three-year term.

“I have had long discussions with Rick Henderson and I am endorsing him to take my seat as your city council member for Place 5. He and his family provide a snapshot of exactly who we are all working for in this city, the future of our current and future residents. His experience will bring a meaningful addition to our city council and I wish him the best of luck in his election.”

Henderson is a senior lecturer at Texas State University in the Department of Political Science.

Gregson highlighted some of the accomplishments the city council has made during the three years he has served on the council, including the passage of Code SMTX and a comprehensive flood ordinance and the acquisition of almost $60 million in federal funds to help “dry out our chronically flooded neighborhoods.”

In his press release, Gregson also laid out his plans to maintain his civic involvement while refocusing on his business interests.

“I plan to become actively involved in assisting the development of small businesses in our city that can provide the career jobs with benefits for our current workforce and that give opportunities for our young graduates to stay in San Marcos versus leaving our city for opportunities elsewhere,” he said.

Gregson said he also intends to be involved in regional mobility and planning as Central Texas braces for continued growth.

“I thank the citizens of San Marcos for having shown their trust in me to allow me to serve them for the past three years,” he said.
