The late Virginia Moore, Darrell Piersol and “Sunny” Sappington recipients of the Heritage Association of San Marcos' Tree of Honor.

HASM to dedicate 3 Trees of Honor

Wednesday, April 17, 2019

The Heritage Association of San Marcos (HASM) will name three deceased members as recipients of the Tree of Honor in Veramendi Plaza Park on Friday, April 26 at 5 p.m.

Virginia Moore was one of the original founders of HASM. A natural leader with a cadre of beloved friends, Moore led the march in turning the organization into one of San Marcos’ finest. Along with Helen van Gundy and Nettie Serur, she was instrumental in starting the Cock House Friday luncheons. They made the luncheons for may years and people would stand in line waiting for the house to open. Antiques to furnish the little house were bought with proceeds of the luncheons.

San Marcos icon Darrell Piersol was an outstanding musician, a B-17 tail gunner in the Army Air Corps during World War II, a leader in Business Management training and, of course, Barbara’s husband. Piersol was one of San Marcos leading philanthropists, helping needy individuals as well as hospitals, schools, universities, many local and regional nonprofit groups and also served on many boards of directors for local, state and national organizations. He was truly a remarkable man.

“Sunny” Sappington, whose real name was Glenda, was a warm, kind, generous and sweet lady who excelled in making friends, baking, gardening and helping others. She was a mainstay for many, many years cooking for the luncheons at the Cock House. A former home economics teacher, she was not only at home in the kitchen but also worked in a happy, pleasant manner. She was always making something “new” and provided many recipes for cookbooks. Additional hobbies included traveling. Her husband Bob worked for Shell and they lived all over the world.

The Tree of Honor ceremony was initiated by the Riverwalk Park Committee of the HASM 18 years ago. The public is invited to attend.
