Jeff Plankenhorn brings signature slide guitar to Summer in the Park

Thursday, July 5, 2018

Tonight Austin country and bluegrass artist Jeff Plankenhorn will light up the stage with his iconic voice and even more iconic slide guitar at San Marcos Plaza Park for the Summer in the Park concert series.

Plankenhorn’s musical repertoire is vast and rich. He moves effortlessly through the genres of country, folk, blues, bluegrass and even rock and soul. He has released five albums to date, “Plank,” “The Speed of Hope,” “Live at the Saxon Pub,” “SoulSlide,” and most recently “Sleeping Dogs.”

Plankenhorn has made a name for himself with his signature slide guitar playing and soulfully written and performed songs. With the recent release of his latest album “Sleeping Dogs,” Plankenhorn has confirmed himself as an adept songwriter and singer as well as a master instrumentalist. Plank plays a lot of guitar on the album, along with pedal steel, piano, upright bass and his custom-made guitar, “The Plank” – that other country artist like Wade Bowen and Lloyd Maines have started using for its signature sound – but his songwriting chops seem to be the most pivotal part of the album.

Plankenhorn plans to play songs from his 2018 album “Sleeping Dogs” during the show, an album drenched in Americana and roots sound, and influenced by the late Tom Petty.

“The ‘SoulSlide’  album was all about showcasing my signature guitar ‘The Plank,’” Plankenhorn said. “The ‘Sleeping Dogs’ album, well, we went into the studio and it happened to be the day that Tom Petty died and everything shifted and so it became a very roots, rock and Americana album; we were influenced by him. The last album was all about the guitar, this one is all about the songs.”

Jeff Plakenhorn will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. and play until 9:30 p.m. at the San Marcos Plaza Park.

The show goes on rain or shine, though if it rains the show will move to the San Marcos Activity Center.
