KZSM is your true community radio

Sunday, October 7, 2018

What do we mean by community radio? One of the first things that comes to mind is that our entire staff is comprised of members from within our community and local surrounding areas. As such, we represent the needs and concerns of our city and surrounding areas. Listening to our commentary programs, one often hears interviews with local individuals expressing their views on current issues, or with city officials and candidates running for office. We attempt to give members of our community a platform to express and share the things that are most important to them and that may contribute to the overall well-being of our listening audience. Maintaining a fair and balanced representation is not an easy task. However, our radio hosts, although sometimes sharing their own views, are diligent in maintaining this balance.

When it comes to music, one of our priorities is to give musicians of all genres exposure and an opportunity to promote themselves through our live program sets in the studio and through various musical events which we sponsor. Every third Thursday, in support of the Third Thursday Walkabouts, we host a concert series in the Kissing Alley. This event is family-friendly, free and open to the public. The musical selections have varied and have ranged from Country music to orchestral music provided by the San Marcos High School and most genres in-between. We are fortunate to have a very diverse and talented pool to draw from here in Central Texas.

Our community involvement also extends to participation and support of events sponsored by other community organizations. Recently, our radio hosts served as parade announcers for the Downtown Mermaid Promenade. We have also been recording the Stories of San Marcos presentations at the Root Cellar Bakery sponsored by the Lifelong Learning Center and the Mermaid Society. These will eventually be broadcast on the air once they are edited. Look for us at the up-coming CONA Debate at the Dunbar Center on the 25th of this month. This will be our first attempt at an actual live remote broadcast and, if successful, may be heard live on KZSM.org as it happens.

We remain open to suggestions on how we may better serve our community. We have been broadcasting high-quality programming for almost two years and still strive to make things better. Let us know what you think.

KZSM (just a little bit south of weird) now streaming world-wide on the internet on KZSM.org.
