Man, 79, dies in two-vehicle crash on RR12

A 79-year-old man died as a result of a two-vehicle accident Wednesday on Old Ranch Road 12 in San Marcos.

According to the Department of Public Safety in Austin, John Burkhardt was killed in the collision that happened at approximately 3 p.m. near where Country Estates Drive comes into RR 12.

The DPS said Burkhardt was in a 2000 Toyota Camry that was exiting Country Etates Drive and “failed to yield right of way” to traffic.

His car was hit on its left side by a 2016 GMC Sierra that had been headed westbound on RR 12. 

After impact, the Toyota traveled on across the lanes of traffic before hitting a utility pole.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Burkhardt was pronounced dead at the scene or if he died later at a hospital.

The DPS did say it is possible Burkhardt had experienced “a medical condition” while driving.

It was also unknown whether he was the sole occupant of the car; and whether anyone in the Sierra was hurt.
