Man dead after auto-pedestrian accident

Tuesday, September 4, 2018

An Australian man was killed while trying to cross Interstate 35 early Saturday morning, city officials said.

According to an email from city spokesman Trey Hatt in response to a Daily Record query, San Marcos police, fire and EMS were dispatched to a collision in the main southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near the 205 mile marker at 4:48 a.m. on Sept. 1.

Callers said a pedestrian had attempted to cross the interstate and was fatally struck by several vehicles. Upon investigation, the pedestrian appeared to have been struck first by a 2010 Mazda 6 and then by a 2015 Toyota Corolla. Neither driver showed any impairment.

The pedestrian, identified as 27-year-old Wade Patrick Maloney of New South Wales, Australia, is being considered at fault for being a pedestrian in the roadway. All lanes of I-35 were closed for just over two hours while the Collision Investigation Team conducted their investigation, officials said. There were no other fatalities or injuries in this incident.

San Marcos Police are in contact with Maloney’s family and have been told he was here on holiday for a month with three other friends. The night of the incident, the four were downtown on the Square but got separated before the bars closed. Investigators believe that Maloney became lost and was trying to find his hotel when he was fatally struck. Police believe he tried to cross the interstate at that location because there was a series of hotels visible across the highway. Maloney was taken by Legend Funeral Home to Lockhart for autopsy.
