Mariachi Nuevo Cascabel brings home honors

Thursday, February 28, 2019

This past weekend was a memorable one for the San Marcos High School Mariachi Nuevo Cascabel.

Although it’s only on the third year of its reboot, the new program offered by SMCISD is already making its mark in the Texas high school mariachi scene. Mariachi Nuevo Cascabel qualified for state level competition a few weeks ago when they received a First Division at Solo and Ensemble completion in San Antonio. This success opened the door for them to travel to Edinburg, where only the best high school mariachis in the state were allowed to take the stage.

We are very proud to announce that Mariachi Nuevo Cascabel was awarded a First Division Superior Performance at this years UIL State Mariachi Festival held at UTRGV on Feb. 23. Although 70 schools were in attendance, only a few were awarded the highest honor by a panel of professional mariachi musicians and educators.

The judges also awarded two Outstanding Performer Awards for Gabe Ortiz and Alicia Cruz for their incredible instrumental and vocal skills.

It is great to see mariachi making a come back at SMCISD and we look forward to building a nationally ranked program over the next couple of years.
