More support needed as Old Baptist Church slips to 8th

Online Contest
Tuesday, October 16, 2018

The forces behind the restoration of the old First Baptist Church still need community support in the competition for a $150,000 preservation grant.

The church is one out of 20 projects competing for preservation funds from the Partnership for Preservation. Winners are determined by the number of votes cast for the project in an online voting campaign. The top 10 projects will receive $150,000 each. The First Baptist Church restoration project is the only project in Texas on the list, but it is competing against projects in big cities like Los Angeles and New York City. As of Friday evening, according to the San Marcos Main Street program, the First Baptist Church project had received 26,303 votes but had slipped to eighth place.

There are also two “mini” contests giving the projects a chance to win an additional $10,000. The project with the highest percentage of new voters wins $10,000, and the project with the highest total number of new voters between Oct. 19 and Oct. 21 will win $10,000.

Participants can vote five times a day through Oct. 26. Anyone anywhere in the world with an email address can register to vote. Individuals with more than one email address can use their various addresses to register and vote. To vote in support of the First Baptist Church restoration, visit the National Geographic's Vote Your Main Street website. More information about the campaign is available on the Facebook event page and at Landmark of Hope's website. Main Street is also hosting a “Celebration of Hope” event for the church on Oct. 20-21.
