Mystery shrouds future of restaurant

New Location

Saltgrass Steak House is relocating, but what’s to come of the building currently housing it remains unknown.

At their Nov. 20 meeting, the San Marcos City Council held a public hearing and a vote on a permit to allow Saltgrass to use wood for more than 20 percent of the exterior building materials for a new restaurant and allow the use of an exterior insulation and finishing system. The new restaurant will be located on the southbound access road at Springtown Way.

“The Saltgrass Steak House is relocating into Springtown Shopping Center, where Logan’s Roadhouse was located,” city planning chief Shannon Mattingly told council during her presentation on the permit.

Saltgrass intends to remove the old Logan’s building and construct a new 11,000 square-foot restaurant. City staff recommended approval of the permit, and council granted it.

The current Saltgrass Steak House location, near the corner of Aquarena Springs Drive and Sessom Drive, belongs to Texas State University. Saltgrass, whose parent company is Landry’s, has been leasing the building. The day before Thanksgiving, university officials said they had not received any official notice from Saltgrass about moving out, but that when official notice is received, the university plans to look for another restaurant tenant.

However, a statement from a Landry’s executive indicates that the university has other plans.

“We’ve enjoyed our time at the 221 Sessom Drive location in the heart of the Texas State University campus. Due to the university’s desire to take back the current restaurant space for its own internal needs, Saltgrass Steak House will be relocating to a new location at 1141 Highway 35 North near I-35 in late 2019,” Executive Vice President of Development Jeff Cantwell said. “We will remain open through the entire transition of moving from the current location to the new location.”

Texas State officials said that Saltgrass just renewed its lease to remain in the location until its new location opens next year and that the university would welcome it if Saltgrass wanted to stay longer, but Texas State has hired a broker to find a new tenant when Saltgrass moves out.
