One suspect in downtown stabbing surrenders, two others still at large

San Marcos Police say that one of three men sought in connection with a downtown knife attack has surrendered to authorities. Sergio Marque Chavarria, 28, turned himself in at the Hays County Law Enforcement Center Friday morning, the city said in a press release.

He is one of three men suspected in the attack, that occurred in the 100 block of West San Antonio Street on Friday, Oct. 26, just as the downtowns bars had closed, and was reportedly identified by security video from a nearby business.

The victim, was was not named by police, had a puncture would to his lower right abdomen and a laceeration on his right forearm. He was taken to Central Texas Medical Center by friends and from there, transferred to Seton South Austin for surgery.

According to witnesses, three men waited for the victim and his two friends outside Nephew’s bar and started an altercation with them at approximately 2:29 a.m. The victim and his friends disengaged from the suspects and walked to the victim’s vehicle.

As the victim was unlocking his car, a gray, 2014 or newer, 4-door Hyundai passenger car with moon roof and spoiler drove up to him, and one of the suspects left the car and stabbed the victim.

The suspect then re-entered his car, and the vehicle drove westbound on San Antonio Street.

The remaining suspects are described as:

• Hispanic male, approx. five foot 2 to five foot 4 inches, stocky build, “buzz cut” hair, goatee facial hair, in his 20s, wearing a maroon T-shirt with graphic design on front, gray pants or jean shorts, and black shoes.

• White male, approx. five feet 8 to five feet 9 inches, fit/athletic build, moustache, in his 20s, red or light brown receding hair, wearing a red T-shirt with white letters, and red fitted cap.

Chavarria, believed to have been the one who stabbed the victim, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony, and is being held on a bond of $100,00.
