Police blame death on texting

Traffic Fatality
Sunday, October 14, 2018

Investigators with the San Marcos Police Department believe a woman killed on Interstate 35 Thursday night was distracted by texting while driving.

Jayde Nicole Sherbert, 22, of San Marcos died after her 2018 Nissan Altima struck the rear of an 18-wheeler near the Hwy. 123 exit around 10:30 p.m. and went underneath the tractor-trailer, the city said in a press release. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

Though they believe texting was involved, the SMPD’s Collision Investigation Team has yet to determine the speed of either vehicle, but did say northbound traffic at the time of the accident was slowed due to road construction.

Sherbert, a former Texas State University student, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Jo Ann Prado.

Two lanes of northbound traffic were blocked until approximately 4:30 a.m. Friday. The investigation is continuing.
