Even dogs got into the action during the Plunge on New Year’s Day 2018. Daily Record file photo

River plunge is Tuesday at noon

It’s that time again for San Marcans to show their mettle by getting an early start on one of every year’s favorite activities — swimming in the San Marcos River.

It’s an unofficial tradition to “Plunge” into the 72-degree river each New Year’s Day at noon from the concrete banks at Sewell Park.

Dianne Wassenich, who regularly participates, warned of higher water this year and advised children and weaker swimmers wear flotation devices. “It is best to put life jackets on the kids and on anyone who is not a good swimmer, since the river is extremely high and fast-flowing this year,” she said. “If you are a good swimmer, think about jumping in downstream a bit, in the spot where most people get out on the stairs. That way you can be down that way in the water to catch those who whoosh right by the stairs and are floundering around, trying to figure out how to get out.”

Parking is available at Strahan Coliseum. Participants are also advised to bring hats, coats, blankets and whatever else to take the chill off once they emerge from the water, which will feel much warmer than the air.

Some also bring their own black-eyed peas and hot chocolate to share.
