San Marcos’ tax rebates still in double-digits

San Marcos is getting almost $2.9 million in rebated sales taxes this month from the Comptroller’s Office and, for the first eight months of the year, is more than 30 percent ahead of last year’s allocations.

Statewide, Comptroller Glen Hegar’s office distributed some $842.7 million in local sales tax allocations to cities this week, up 7.9 percent from a year ago. Year-to- date allocations to cities were also up by the same percentage.

Across Hays County, only two of the 10 taxing municipalities saw decreases — Uhland saw an 8.9 percent drop in its monthly allocation but is still ahead 12.57 percent for the year. Wimberley’s monthly allocation was down by .98 percent; for the year so far, Wimberley’s allocations are up by just .44 percent.

  • San Marcos’ monthly allocation of $2,885,393.26 was 20.68 percent greater than August of 2017. For the year to date, the city is up by 31.17 percent and has collected $23,876,163.62 in allocations.
  • Kyle’s monthly rebate was for $786,618.91, which represents and increase of 12.05 percent. So far this year Kyle has received allocations totaling $5,283,351.27, an increase of 9.72 percent over the first eight months of last year.
  • Buda’s monthly allocation, $621,700.23, was up 10.58 percent and for the year so far allocations are up 12.95 percent, totaling $4,519,280.63.
  • Dripping Springs’ monthly allocation of $224,428.17 was up 14.80 percent. For the year to date, Dripping Springs has been rebated $1,519,980.87, an increase of 12.50 percent.
  • The largest monthly increase — 431.85 percent, went to Hays City with a monthly allocation of $623.67. So far this year Hays City has been allocated $12,386.09, up 42.61 percent compared to last year.
  • Mountain City, with a monthly rebate of $1,450.81, saw an increase of 5.77 percent. The city is up 33.49 percent for year so far, and has received allocations totaling $12,936.65.
  • Niederwald saw a monthly increase of 9.03 percent with its allocation of $3,556.98. For the year to date the city is ahead 6.62 percent and has been rebated $25,001.50.
  • Woodcreek, with a monthly allocation of $5,260.03, realized an increase of 18.57 percent. For the year so far, Woodcreek is ahead 10.82 percent, having received $35,219.06.

Generally, August allocations represent sales that occurred in June.
