Campaign Finance Reports
Thursday, October 18, 2018

Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series of articles examining the campaign donations received by local candidates in the Nov. 6 election. In looking at the 30-day campaign finance reports filed by candidates for San Marcos city offices and for Hays County judge, the Daily Record is highlighting the sources of candidates’ largest donations, donations from special interests and/or political action committees, and donations that come from outside San Marcos.

Mark Rockeymoore, Griffin Spell and Shane Scott are facing off for the Place 4 seat on the San Marcos City Council. Of the three, Scott has received the most in campaign donations, with $7,391. Scott’s largest donation is $2,500, which came from the San Marcos Professional Fire Fighters Association Political Action Committee. Developer Robert McDonald, who lists an Austin address, and developer Reagan Dickerson donated $1,000 each. Jill Herrera, who lists a New Braunfels address, and council member Scott Gregson donated $500 each.

Other out-of-town donations came from Virgilio Altamirano, principal of Apante Investments, who donated $300, and Will Conley, who lives in Wimberley and donated $100. Apante owns 18 properties in San Marcos.

Other than the firefighters’ political action committee, the only monetary donor to Scott’s campaign that is not an individual is local business Divided Sky Roofing, which donated $100.

Scott has been endorsed by the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin HomePAC.

Spell reports $4,024.25 in campaign donations, including $1,300 the candidate donated to himself (one donation of $1,000, and one of $300). Other than that, his largest donations are $800 from Daniel and Glenda Lutz of Dickinson, Texas, and $300 from Jennifer Martinez of Kyle. Other out-of-town donations include $250 from David and Nancy Crowell of Kyle and $100 from James Spell of Dickinson.

All of Spell’s monetary contributions came from individuals.

Rockeymoore reports $3,028.21 in monetary campaign donations. His largest contribution came from an online fundraiser, which garnered a total of $694 (one round of cash amounting to $120 and another totaling $574.20), according to his campaign finance report. His second largest contribution is from Elijah Cummins, a U.S. congressman from Baltimore, who contributed $600. Gilbert Fulmer and J.M. Telford of San Marcos contributed $300 each.

The only other out-of-town contribution Rockeymoore receive is from James and Mary Pendergast, who list an Austin address. They contributed $100. Other than his online fundraiser and a meet-and-greet that garnered $89, Rockeymoore’s monetary contributions came from individuals.
