The animals seized from a home in Buda last week were found to be treated cruelly and are now the responsibility of the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter.

At an administrative hearing Thursday, Justice of the Peace District 5 Scott Cary signed an agreed judgment ordering the defendant, Melissa Caffey, to pay the accrued cost of transporting, impounding and immunizing the 161 cats and 15 dogs – an amount determined to be $1,750. Caffey was also ordered to turn over ownership of the animals to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter, which is to adopt the animals out. Those too sick to be adopted or that are not adopted will be “destroyed humanely,” a press release from the court said.

More information will be available later in the San Marcos Daily Record.
