Sending students to class with the things they need to succeed

Sunday, September 16, 2018

Prior to the start of school, volunteers within the San Marcos community came together to give over 200 SMCISD students a great start for 2018-2019 school year.

Head to Toe, a community organization founded in 2013, aims to assist families going through hardships by supplying children with the essentials needed for the school year. Items donated to children include school supplies, backpacks, personal hygiene items and a Bible. Local professionals volunteer their time to provide services such as haircuts, vision and dental screening, and medical coverage information.

Students were fully equipped, right down to backpacks.

Head to Toe would not have been able to provide so many students with these gifts without the support from the San Marcos community. A fundraiser was held in June to raise money for supplies, Sponsor-a-Kid brought in 34 sponsors, a Zumbathon fundraiser was led by Sylvia Hutto in early August, and the First United Methodist Church of San Marcos created an Angel Tree for 50 children. Parishioners had the pleasure of shopping for an individual child.

This organization is deeply grateful for the continued support received from the community. We look forward to partnering with other community organizations in the future to reach more families in the years to come.

A Tejano dance fundraiser is tentatively scheduled for this fall to begin raising funds for the next school year. Announcements can be found on our Facebook page, Head to Toe 2018.

Head to Toe board members include President Barbara Escobar; Vice President Sylvia Muzzy; Secretary Lisa Deleon; Treasurer Teresa Wilson; and Co-Treasurer Kristan Alvarez.
