SMA student ranked Eagle Scout

Thursday, October 11, 2018

John Gordon Murphy, a junior at San Marcos Academy, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank in Boy Scouts. Only 4 percent of Boy Scouts go on to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Murphy’s accomplishment represents 10 years of adventure, fun, work and dedication to the Cub Scout Pack 18 and the Boy Scout Troop 1954.

On his journey to earn his Eagle Scout rank, Murphy has performed hours of community service, provided service and leadership to his troop, and he is currently serving as Junior Assistant Scout Master for Troop 1954.

Murphy is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, which serves as scouting's National Honor Society. The Order of the Arrow recognizes Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. Members of the Order must be nominated by their fellow Scouts.

Murphy's Eagle Scout project was completed in March 2018. His project was to install rock gardens on either side of two large speed humps on the campus of the San Marcos Academy. These rock gardens not only beautify the campus, they also prevent people from driving around the speed humps and ruining the grass.

Murphy will be formally presented the Eagle Scout award at a Court of Honor ceremony at the Thermon training room on Oct. 14.
