Still time to voice support of grant for historic church

Friday, October 5, 2018

The historic First Baptist Church is doing well in a nationwide contest for grant money, but sustained support will help its chances of getting a share of $2 million in restoration funds.

At a meeting Tuesday night, the church restoration committee said that the project was hovering between fifth and sixth place in the Partners in Preservation competition, which will award the top 10 projects $150,000 for restoration. Winners are determined by votes from the public. Participants need to visit the Vote Your Main Street website, create an account, verify their email address and vote for the project. Anyone of any age, anywhere in the world, can vote. Each email address gets five votes per day, and voting will continue until Oct. 26.

“We just have to continue the momentum,” said Ramika Adams, member of the restoration committee and treasurer of The Calaboose African-American History Museum.

Adams also said the restoration committee is getting together documentation to apply for a federal African-American Civil Rights Preservation Grant.

The committee is also looking for businesses and organizations to host fundraising events and for groups and individuals to make donations at the Calaboose Facebook page

Information about the church and the restoration project can be found on the Main Street Program's Landmark of Hope website.
