Terms for school site at La Cima reached

The San Marcos CISD heard the terms of a land donation agreement with the La Cima development that would hold a site for the construction of a new school.

“They have offered to come and give us the land agreement and hold it for five years,” Karen Griffith, SMCISD assistant superintendent for business and support, told the board at its Monday night meeting. “They want to show the district that they are committed and they would like us to build an elementary school.”

La Cima and the Trace development had both set land aside for the district to build a new elementary campus; the district eventually chose the Trace as the site of Rodriguez Elementary, which is now under construction. The land La Cima has offered is not the same site that it had set aside for the district before.

In other business Monday, the board approved the design development for the new Child Development Center. Coleman Uresti from Perkins and Will presented the design and said that the project is scheduled to go out to bid in January to get construction started before summer.

“We’re really trying to start in March so the kids can start playing when school starts in August,” he said.

The new design will have a bus dropoff area, additional bathrooms and a focus on outdoor play areas, Uresti said. The old Child Development Center portables will have to be removed as part of the construction process.
