The second half of Mid-Texas Symphony’s 2018-2019 Season begins on Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at Canyon High School in New Braunfels. MTS continues the search for the coveted position of MTS Music Director as Diane Wittry, conductor, takes the stage. On Sunday, March 31 at 4 p.m. in Seguin, the final candidate, Teresa Cheung, conducts/ auditions.

There are two things to take into consideration when attending the concerts

First, MTS will name a new music director at the end of the season. The MTS audience in attendance is vital to the process, as they meet the candidate in a post-concert reception and give MTS feedback about the performance immediately following the concert.

Two auditions occurred in 2018, and with Wittry, MTS approaches the third candidate, as it moves toward the end of 2018-2019 Season. Candidates Akiko Fujimoto and Silas Huff auditioned/conducted in September and October 2018. Wittry and Cheung conduct concerts in February and March 2019 respectively.

All four candidates are put thorough a grueling weekend with three rehearsals, one classical performance, three sit-down interviews and two children’s concert in just three days. Each of the candidates possesses a wealth of knowledge, extraordinary musicianship and talent. The programs presented have been chosen by each candidate , who brings her/his own programming, music selections for the MTS children’s concerts and their hand-selected guest artist.

The final choice for Mid-Texas Symphony Music Director is anyone’s guess. Patrons, musicians, and members of the community at large complete a survey about their impressions of the candidates’ auditions. The input of the stakeholders are vital to the successful selection of the next MTS Director of Music. Be a part of the MTS of the Future; come to the concert, experience the prospective conductors and give us your opinion!

Second, when you think of the PAC at Canyon High School — think beautiful, state-of-the-art venue with comfortable seating, excellent acoustics and a gorgeous proscenium stage. Long gone are the days of the cafeteria/auditorium (remember those horrible things we called the cafetorium?). So if the word High School scares you — do not worry the PAC is awesome, and you are going to love seeing the concert there.

Check out more about the candidates, their experiences and the programs they have chosen to conduct for their auditions.
