Trustees eye making records digital, then table the issue

If you went to school in the San Marcos CISD, those permanent records your teachers always warned you about could be digitized, and board meeting minutes might join them.

At its meeting last week, the SMCISD board of trustees voted to table a measure that would allow meeting minutes to be digitized.

“Otherwise we have to hold the actual copy and have a place to store that for the next umpteen years,” said Karen Griffith, assistant superintendent of business and operations.

The district is working to digitize more records, including student records, to cut down on the amount of space needed for storage.

“We have a big project to do,” Griffith said. “We’re running out of storage space. We can either build another building to put all these permanent records in, or we can start digitizing.”

Trustee John McGlothlin asked if it would cost the district anything. Superintendent Michael Cardona said the district would reach out to several different firms to get cost estimates.

Trustee Anne Halsey asked for a more detailed presentation on the digitization process. McGlothlin also asked for more information, particularly about the cost. The vote to table the item was unanimous, with trustee Margie Villalpando absent.

In other business, the board approved the hiring of an additional special education teacher at Travis Elementary School, the hiring of an instructional assistant at Hernandez Elementary School and the hiring of a district-wide instructional assistant.
