Vandals target downtown businesses

Social media posts tell of at least two incidents

Rocks have shattered windows in possibly three or more downtown businesses in recent weeks, prompting a call for other businesses — and their patrons — to be on the lookout.

A rock was thrown through the window at KZSM Radio at 216 N. Guadalupe St. at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27 and a similar event occurred at Blue Moon Optical early on Saturday, Dec. 15.

“If anyone has any information, please contact the station,” KZSM Vice President Rob Roark posted on Facebook about the incident at KZSM. “If you would like to help with the cost of a replacement, we are taking donations at kzsm.org. We are nonprofit and all volunteer.”

The window at the twoyear-old internet community radio station was covered with yellow tape, some of it fashioned to look like Bandaids, and pleas for donations and help finding the person or persons responsible. One poster had affixed to it the rock that caused the damage.

Security footage at Blue Moon Optical on San Antonio Street shows what appears to be a man and a woman walking briskly by as the window explodes inward. The video is posted on the business’ Facebook page.

“Please be aware if you are a downtown business owner, and be on the lookout,” Roark posted.

KZSM Station Manager Gene Randall said the company called to give an estimate on repairing the window told KZSM personnel they had answered a similar call at Sean Patrick’s. “Unfortunately, there were no surveillance cameras in the area and we understand that the police department has no leads,” Randall said.
