Academy band, choir bring home top awards

San Marcos Academy’s High School Band and Choir received top ratings for their performances recently at the TAPPS State Band and Choir Championships.

Earning First Division Ratings from all of the TAPPS judges, the Band received the coveted “Sweepstakes” Award for Concert and Sightreading April 20 in Temple. They were the only class 4-A Band at the State Contest to earn Sweepstakes. 

Overall the Band placed third in State out of 33 4-A schools based on total points for all of the 2016-17 TAPPS Band events, which included Solo and Ensemble, Concert and Sightreading. The band performed “Canterbury Walk,” “Hsien” and “Catch the Wind” at their concert performance.

Not to be outdone, the SMA High School Choir also received First Division ratings from all judges in their Concert competition at the TAPPS State Choir Championships in Waco April 22.  

Overall the Choir placed fourth in State out of 33 4-A schools for their combined solo, ensemble and concert competitions. The Choir performed “Sing to the Lord,” “And This Shall Be for Music” and “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel” at the state contest.

The Choir, under the direction of Randy Leifeste and accompanied by Jody Leifeste,  performed a final time this year at the Academy Baccalaureate Service May 12.
