Children benefit from Lions Camp

Sunday, September 23, 2018

Over the summer, Lions Club members from all over Texas volunteered their time and donated money to give some special children an experience they would never forget at Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville. Children with physical disabilities, Down Syndrome and diabetes enjoyed fellowship with children just like them for a week at the camp.

For many children, this was the first time being away from their caregivers and family. The Lion sponsor for each child eased the minds of the campers and their parents by providing information about the camp and joining them on dropoff day and the final awards ceremony.

In San Marcos, one special camper’s life was changed forever. Sabriya Thomas, 8, cried on a regular basis to her mother, Thelma Thomas, about being the only child with diabetes. She wondered why she was being punished and why she was different from everyone else in her school. Sabriya’s teacher reached out to the San Marcos Lions Club to inquire about the camp.

Sabriya was all smiles at the awards ceremony held Aug. 4. She spent a week with other children that were living with diabetes and learned how to properly check her blood sugar level and what types of foods were best for her.

Sponsor Sylvia Muzzy plans on sponsoring Sabriya and other children that would benefit from the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville.

Through money made at the San Marcos Lions Tube Rental, the San Marcos Lions were able to donate $25,000 toward repairs needed at the camp in Kerrville.
