City extends local disaster declaration

The San Marcos City Council voted unanimously to extend the local disaster declaration until 12 p.m. on Feb. 26.

Mayor Jane Hughson said San Marcos was one of the first five municipalities in Texas to issue a declaration of a Local State of Disaster on Feb. 13 due to the severe winter weather, which will give the city access to Federal Emergency Management Agency funding.

“Today we are meeting under these very extreme and difficult circumstances to extend the disaster declaration relating to the very severe winter weather we are experiencing,” City Manager Bert Lumbreras said. “It's critical that we have this declaration in place.”

The resolution stated that San Marcos residents continue to experience interruption of electric service and water supply to their homes due to the extreme weather conditions, includ ing extended periods of below-freezing temperatures. The accumulation of ice on area roadways has made vehicular travel dangerous for residents and for emergency services personnel.

Hughson thanked all the volunteers and restaurants that have been providing food.

Lumbreras stated there would be a more extensive update and opportunity to thank city staff, individuals and businesses for their hard work during the freeze.
