CM Allen Parkway opens to traffic

Friday, December 20, 2019

Following multiple construction delays, CM Allen Parkway has reopened for traffic.

The CM Allen Parkway Improvement project began in August of 2018 and was originally scheduled to open in April but weather delays caused it to be delayed until late summer. The project, however, was delayed again until December. CM Allen Parkway connects Hopkins Street with University Drive.

The roadway opened Monday but lane closures remain as the project continues with roadway striping, multicolored bulb-out installations and the completion of the Hutchison Street biofiltration pond.

The project cost  $3.3 million and is supposed to provide safe, connected, multimodal transportation, environmental protection and attractive public spaces, according to the city.

The project added an improved pedestrian connection between downtown and the San Marcos River with a 12-foot wide multi-use pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists. The intersections at Hutchison Street and the Plaza Parking lot were reconfigured for safety. Biofiltration areas were installed to hold and filter stormwater runoff before it enters the San Marcos River, while more than 50 trees were added to the area.
