County forms Complete Count Committee

Thursday, October 24, 2019

With the 2020 U.S. Census just around the corner, Hays County is aiming to increase participation in the count with a Complete Count Committee.

The committee’s goal is to help educate the public on the importance of the U.S. Census, and the public is invited to be part of the committee. The Complete Count Committee will meet for the first time on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Courtroom at 111 E. San Antonio St., according to a Facebook post by Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra.

“We encourage citizens from the educational, media, business, religious, philanthropic and community sectors to become part of our Complete Count Committee,” Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra said in a press release. “Members should be willing and able to serve until the Census is over and help implement a creative outreach campaign in areas that may not be covered by the municipal and university Complete Count Committees.”

Census figures allow for the distribution of billions of dollars from the U.S. Government, are used for redistricting and determines the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, stated a press release.

“An accurate count of residents for the 2020 Census will help ensure that Hays County gets its fair share of tax dollars back from the federal government, which is why it is important that every household be counted accurately,” Becerra said in a press release. “I want this volunteer committee to work with other area committees and to reach unincorporated areas of the county which might not be aware of the importance of the census.”

Hays County citizens who are interested in being considered for the Complete Count Committee  are asked to email judge.becerra@co.hays.tx.us with their name, contact email, phone number, and which sector (educational, media, business, religious, philanthropic, or community) they plan to represent.
